ON a fine morning on Queens Park the Rock FC made sure their pre-season ended without a single defeat with a record of four wins and one draw.
Rock were without six regulars for the game against Pudsey 2005, but manager Strang's new signings showed their worth. They did go a goal down, but turned it round with new boy John Gale at the centre of most the play, taking over in midfield along w
ith Hewson. Rock equalised when great play down the left by debutant Dave Evans led to Karl Parkin grabbing his second goal in two games since returning to the club.
Stand-in manager Marshall requested more passing from his players in his half-time talk and there were instant results when Ricky Wagstaff found acres of space down the right and played the ball to Gale who struck a little belter from 25 yards out to leave the keeper with no chance.
Gavin Bullers seemed happy playing behind Evans, but it was Nelson who set up a third goal with a corner from which captain Ryan Hewson scored with a bullet header. Manager's player of last season Matt Jackson seems to have returned with ability to pass the ball and although his goals tally of 52 in 12 games last year spoke for itself he has developed a new side that can only reap further rewards for Rock. He still has his scoring touch, though, and was on target for Rock's fourth at Pudsey which completed the scoring.
Darren Strang was pleased with the effort from the new boys and they have given him a real headache for Sunday's opening game of the season against Cross Keys. Players should meet at the Rock, 9.45pm prompt.
