AFTER more excitement, thrills and outstanding batting, Birstall are still fighting for the Premier Division title in the Central Yorkshire League and aiming to heap more pressure on leaders Wrenthorpe this Saturday.
With two points still separating the two title rivals and two games to go it is still all to play for and neither side is showing any sign of weakness.

Wrenthorpe breezed to an emphatic 10-wicket win over bottom of the table Scholes to show that they are still keeping their game together while Birstall were tested to the max by Mirfield Parish Cavaliers, but came through in dramatic style to earn another vital six-point haul.

It was all plain sailing to start with as centuries from openers Connor Williams and Rob McFarlane enabled Birstall to pile up a massive 345-5 score, but Mirfield kept battling in their reply and also scored well to reach 259 before their final wicket fell in the very last over.

Crucially Birstall had six points not the four they would have gained if they had not claimed all 10 Mirfield wickets and they will be looking for another maximum haul at home to eighth-placed Ossett at Leeds Road this Saturday while hoping for a slip-up by Wrenthorpe who entertain Batley who are battling to avoid relegation.

Birstall are also in action on Sunday when they try again to play their Yorkshire Council Senior Championship semi-final at Wickersley. Last Sunday's tie was abandoned for rain after Wickersley had reached 149-7, but it will now be played again, starting from scratch. The final, originally scheduled for next Sunday, has been put back a week to September 14.

Another side chasing championship success, Gildersome, took a major step towards the CYL Division Two title when they beat main rivals Methley A in a low scoring contest last weekend.

They are now 10 points clear and will be aiming to seal top spot this Saturday when away to bottom of the table Batley A.

There is some confusion about how many teams will be allowed promotion from Division Two, but if it is to be three, as rules set out at the start of the season, Birstall A and Woodkirk are still right in the hunt with two games remaining.

Both won their latest games to close the gap on second-placed Methley A and will be looking to carry on the winning ways, although they are away to Ossett A and Mirfield Parish Cavaliers A respectively.

For East Ardsley, however, it is a case of bouncebackability and whether they can find it against Hopton Mills at Jeffrey Field this Saturday after the major disappointment of a shock defeat at Moorlands.

Up against a side struggling in second bottom in Division One, they were left stunned as their last five wickets went down for only four runs to leave them 14 runs short of a very reachable target. As a result Stanley were able to stretch their lead at the top and Altofts jumped back above Dan McTernan's men into second place.
