Morley RFC 26
North Walsham 7

MORLEY stepped up their preparations from the previous week with a victory over Midlands One side North Walsham in the second of their pre-season matches at Scatcherd Lane.
Against decent opposition it was a more than useful workout with Simon Bradshaw doing well in an unfamiliar full back role and Mark Chester forming a new half back combination with Sean Dadswell.

It was Morley straight on to the attack to go in front in the opening minute as good chasing down by Chester brought him the opening try to which he added a conversion.

Six minutes in and it was the visitors who should have scored after a quick throw-in caught the Maroons out, but poor passing from the backs saw the chance missed. Only a knock on then denied them following another bright attack.

However, on 28 minutes Morley were on the attack through Field, Joe Battye and Michael Ash and a great pass by Dadswell released new skipper Field to score under the posts. Chester added the extras.

Fine inter-passing between Simon Bradshaw, Koby Gyast and Ash then took play down the right, the ball was switched left and Karl Bradshaw raced over for an excellent try. Morley almost added to their 19-0 lead right on half-time when another great move saw Neil Murray and Field combine to send Simon Bradshaw clear only to be brought back for a forward pass.

A fourth try did follow six minutes into the second half after line-out ball was secured and the backs moved it along for Simon Bradshaw to race in for a well deserved try. Chester added the conversion and that was the last of the Morley scoring as they began to ring the changes to give players valuable game time.

Walsham were seen more as an attacking force in the final quarter and were only denied by a try saving tackle from Simon Bradshaw after breaking out from their own half. The visitors did get a try on 78 minutes, though, when Rob Clymer completed a good move and Gideon Strydon kicked the conversion.

Morley now play Broughton Park in their third and final pre-season friendly game this Saturday at Scatcherd Lane (kick-off 3pm) with free entry for supporters.

The visitors had a good season last year when third in North West Two, just failing to gain the play-off spot behind champions Chester and runners-up Stockport.

Coaches Peter Seabourne and Scott Benton have both been pleased with the performances so far and see this additional game as ideal preparation for the league season which starts on Saturday, September 13 when Morley travel to Stockport. Leon Treco and Scott Evans are set to return to action this weekend, but are competing with the players who have performed so well in the first two games.
