ANOTHER weekend of mixed fortunes for Morley CC saw the first team fail to halt the charge of Farsley while the seconds enjoyed a fantastic victory which puts them in pole position to win their division.
Farsley secured the second division title with their six-wicket win at Scatcherd Lane and the result all but ensured that Morley would have to apply for re-election.
There was some encouragement for the hosts as they handed first XI debuts to two
more of this year's successful under 17 side - Verundev Sambhi and Matti Bramley - and Sambhi in particular took his chance.
But after going in first the Scatcherd Lane side struggled to build a total against the quality spin bowling of former Yorkshire player Ashley Metcalfe and overseas player Lorenzo Ingrams.
Opener Dave Nebard put in another gritty effort to score 20 and there were a couple of brief, but exciting, knocks from Nathan Bromby (21) and Richard Barber (16). It was the performance of 16-year-old Sambhi that was the main talking point, however. The youngster announced his arrival in first team cricket by smashing Metcalfe for a huge six into the car park. He then proceeded to hammer a four back over Ingrams' head. Sambhi went on to make a promising 20 before Metcalfe finally trapped him.
Metcalfe then bowled Spenser Horsfall to gain his side's fourth bonus point which secured the Division Two title and shortly after the innings closed at 102 all out.
Farsley did not take long to knock the runs off, although they had a couple of scares along the way. Bromby picked up two wickets, one to a good catch from new boy Bramley, while home spinner Barber picked up a couple more in another good spell of bowling.
While the firsts were losing again, there were no such problems for Morley Seconds as they went top of the Second Teams Division Two following a 37-run win over Bradford and Bingley who had been top.
Morley got off to a poor start in the crunch game as they were quickly reduced to 7-2. The stage was set perfectly, though, for veteran Peter Lloyd to take control. He rolled back the years to compile a fine 46 and, aided by Andrew Kirkwood (39), Richard Winn (34 not out) and John Hyde (28), enabled Morley to post a defendable total of 188.
Matthew Dowse got the second innings off to a great start for Morley with a wicket in the first over, but Bingley then steadily went about building their reply and at 75-2 at drinks looked to be well on their way.
However, in a season where the team have owed much to the exploits of their young players, it was the turn of two more of the senior players to step up to the mark. Captain Andrew Cutt and Richard Winn produced outstanding spells of naggingly accurate bowling that squeezed the life totally from the Bingley reply.
In gathering gloom, supported by a totally focused group of fielders, Cutt and Winn delivered ball after ball right on the spot as the run rate started to spiral. Forced to take risks, the home batsmen were then dismissed one by one to finish on 151-9.
Cutt rightly took the plaudits with another five-wicket haul, but Winn's contribution was terrific too as he claimed 2-38 in 15 overs.
