PLANS to make Morley town centre come alive with events throughout the next 12 months are starting to take shape.
At Monday's meeting of the Town Centre Partnership a number of ideas were decided upon, including a book-themed outdoor market to tie in with Morley Literature Festival, a range of Christmas events and a big Yorkshire Day celebration next year.
Th
e first event will be the market to be held in the town centre during October's Literature Festival and it is hoped it will attract not just local traders but a number of book sellers to the area to trade on the literary fever that will be raging through the town that week.
After that a number of events are being planned to build on the late-night openings in the town centre that marked the run up to Christmas last year.
Activities such as carol singing and competitions took place on a weekly basis in the run-up to the festive season and this year it is hoped there may be some weekend fun similar to that organised by the entertainments committee over the summer to add to the big traditional Christmas lights switch-on.
President of Morley Chamber of Trade, Keith Robinson, said it was hoped events would be organised by his group to run alongside Leeds City Council-run events, such as the switch-on and the Literature Festival.
"We would like to expand on such events and build on the themes to make them bigger and better and get even more people into Morley," he said.
"We had a very successful St George's Day Saturday this year and we intend to work very closely with the St George's Society to put on an even more fantastic event next year."
There are also proposals to stage a big Yorkshire Day event next August to keep up the steady stream of big events throughout the year.
"The Chamber will take on the organisation and get involved and we want to make it as big a festival as we can," Mr Robinson said.
The Chamber of Trade is also on the look-out for an enthusiastic person to take on some of the organisation of the events.
It has recently lost one of its most vibrant members, Carol Lund, whose Queen Street shop Finally Found closed last month, and is in need of people to help fill the void she has left.
As well as wanting to encourage any new members of the Chamber of the Trade who may want to become more involved, the group is looking for an occasional events organiser who would be paid for the events they help stage.
Anyone interested should contact Keith on 07712576868.
