FORMER Wolves striker Steve Bull says Leeds United have every chance of being this season's surprise package as a "footballing side" under head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Ex-England forward Bull spent 13 years with Wolves between 1986 and 1999 and experienced many battles with the Whites, firstly in United's 1989-90 Division Two promotion campaign under Howard Wilkinson and then in the top-flight with Leeds managed by Wilkinson, George Graham and David O'Leary.

Twenty one years after retiring, Bull will now see his former side lock horns with Leeds back in the Premier League for the first time in 16 years come Monday night's clash at Elland Road with both sides having been relegated in 2004.

Wolves have gone up and back down since but the two teams are now finally back side by side in the top tier with the Molineux outfit having stormed to promotion in 2018 as Championship champions.

The Molineux outfit have sealed two seventh-placed finishes since and are now joined by last season's second tier winners Leeds.

Bull says he now sees a very different Leeds outfit to the one of previous years - especially with United notoriously tough under Don Revie in the 1960s and 70s - but the former forward has paid tribute to the modern day side under Argentinian head coach Biesla.

Writing in his column for the expressandstar, Bull said: "Leeds, back in the old days, used to be rock-hard – not afraid to go through players and make their presence felt.

"Now, they are more of a footballing side. I have watched them a couple of times this season and fair play to Marcelo Bielsa, he has done really well with them.

"They have every chance of being the team that Sheffield United were last season, a bit of a surprise package, as they do not seem to fear anybody and have a set playing style.

"What I am most worried about is whether Nuno has had enough time with the lads ahead of it.

"Another few days would have been ideal but, fingers crossed, they are able to knuckle down and get a result at Elland Road.

"It has not quite clicked in the first four games, but we still have more points than we did at this stage last year.

"The new players need to properly bed in, get those fresh partnerships on the pitch and everyone on the same wavelength.

"It will take a bit of time, but if we can get more wins on the board while it is a bit of a work in progress, things should only get better as the season goes on."
